Aaron's father, Thomas; died young at age of 45 or 47 (depending on different source records), leaving Mary with 7 children ranging in age from 7 to 21 yrs.

Neither Enan or Eli had any children. Enan never married & Eli married Sadie Riddlespraker. Both brothers moved across the river from Brockville to Jefferson Co., NY.

Alexander and wife, Adaline, are buried with their son Allan, who was a talented pianist and travelled extensively. Allan always kept the farm in Brockville as his home base, never married and had no children.

This house was standing in 2006 on or very near the Peterson/LaPointe farm property. It is not likely the original home but would be very close to the former home's original character - minus the satellite dish, of course! Stone construction with huge second story beams inside. The very nice occupants let us inside for a tour - they bought the house to retire in; they're not from Brockville area. John Taylor willed this land to his "natural daughter, Mary Taylor, by Sarah Peterson" . John stated that his lawful wife, Jane, should be allowed to live there until her death, after which the land would go to Mary. When Jane died and Mary acquired the land, she and Thomas lived there with their family and her mother, Sarah (Peterson). Mary was Sarah's only child. It would be expected that this was the land that Aaron and his siblings grew up on as children in a house similar to this. The lovely stonework on this home has been painted over.

Francis and Emily Brayton are Morton and 'Pete' (Maurice) Brayton's parents. Buried here is also Mort's wife, Eva Brown - they never had children. We did not identify the child's grave beside their stone, however.

Very difficult to see, but, the arch reads 'Holy Japanese Martyrs Catholic Cemetery - 1860'. If you zoom in on the centre of the photo, Catherine Heffernan's headstone is the small white marble one in the middle. She was the oldest child of Owen Eugene Heffernan and Maria Noonan - her sister, Ellen, married Aaron LaPointe.

Church of the Japanese Martyrs is located on route 42, Bastard Township, Leeds Co. and is often called the "Phillipsville Church". It had been purchased by a family by 2006 and is now a residence. It was a catholic church built in 1860. The cemetery is immediately across the road and holds the following family members: Bridget Heffernan, 1865 - 1936 and her husband, Michael Kennedy, 1862 - 1925; Maggie Kennedy, daughter of M. and Bridget, d. Oct. 8, 1894 age 5 mos. 11 days; Catherine Heffernan, wife of J.H. Neff, 1852 -1904. There is also a Thomas Kennedy and wife Elizabeth Ralf. After Catherine Heffernan died, John Neff married Ciel Ralf. The Ralf, Heffernan and Neff families apparently were close as all of those names turn up together again in Manitoba in the 1920's.

There were 9 children born to Owen Heffernan and Maria Noonan. Catherine was the oldest daughter, then Bridget, then Ellen, who married Aaron LaPointe, and the youngest daughter was Lillian Elizabeth. They had 5 brothers, in birth order, Thomas, Robert, Michael, Daniel and Charles. Ellen was the only child who left the Brockville area. The Heffernans had land near Charleston Lake in Leeds County, close to the village of Farmersville, which later changed its name to Athens.

Good thing there is a sign here because when the corn is high it cannot be found unless you know precisely where you're going! Barber Cemetery is the resting place of several Peterson families (siblings of Sarah, Aaron's grandmother).

Barber Pioneer Cemetery, Leeds Co., Ontario. It is in the middle of a farmer's corn field but protected by a post and bale wire fence.

James Peterson, b. 1803, Sarah's brother and the oldest son of Sgt. Conrad Peterson, United Empire Loyalist - which means that if YOU can prove your descendancy from Sgt. Peterson to the Society of UEL's, that you, too, are entitled to place UEL behind your name. Just throwing that out there....FYI

Showing the restoration work on the weathered stones - the cemetery is designated abandoned because it is no longer used for burials, but, it is cared for. The boulders and fieldstones in the background mark burial spots for which there may never have even been a headstone. There is a post and bale wire fence that separates it from the farmer's fields.

The sleuths....this is Conrad Peterson's orginal land. Nothing stand of his home and there is a retired school teacher living in the house that is there now. He kindly agreed to let us traipse through his backyard & take pictures beside the family burial ground. It is marked out by the iron rail in back of us. The trees/shrubs are very grown over & there are no carved tombstones, just fieldstones mark the graves of Conrad and his wife, Lucy DeWolf, and perhaps other family members.

Our tour guide, Jack Brown, advised us that the fieldstones would be used to mark the head and foot of each grave, so you could expect the body to lie in between the two markers. When the stones are roughly 6 feet apart, that would be an adult grave. Where the stones were only 2 or 3 feet apart, it would be a child's grave. If we go back in May 2008, I would like to count the stones to see how many Petersons are resting here. Update May 2008 - never made it back to this burial ground.

Oakleaf /Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery - final resting spot of Thomas Heffernan, his wife and 2 boys. Thomas had a large family of 7 boys and 2 daughters. He built a large brick home with 5 bedrooms on Oakleaf Rd. outside of Athens, Rear of Yonge and Escott Townships. Thomas' wife, Jane Sutton Beale's family operated Beale's Mills, a sawmill/gristmill complex near Charleston Lake which supplied many pioneer farms in the area. Their son, "Wellie", who rests in Oakleaf with them, was Reeve of Rear of Yonge and Escott for 13 years beginning in 1959.

An original millstone from the Lyn grist mill. The old mill is still standing & has been converted to a museum. The ladies of the musuem were in the process of sorting & archiving a huge drawer of old old photographs that residents have donated for historical significance. On the next trip, I'd like to contact them again and see if a person could set up a viewing...might be some LaPointes/Heffernans/Petersons from long ago??? Update May 2008 - spoke with the ladies at the Lyn Museum, and to date they had no photos of interest to LaPointes, Heffernans or Petersons.

These are Pete Brayton's family back in Brockville. Emily LaPointe was Aaron LaPointe's sister and she had fraternal twins, Morton and Maurice (Pete). Ellen Ada (Nell) Rolston who married Aaron's son, Frank, kept house for Pete on his farm back in McCord, Saskatchewan in the 1930's. Pete was pretty much a father to Nell's children Marie, Bill, Rex, and Edna.

Olive LaPointe and Norman Lee never had children. She was really the family matriarch after Mary Peterson LaPointe died and she stayed on the family land and took care their youngest brother Ur's affairs after he went to the hospital in Hamilton.

Aaron's maternal grandmother (she is the daughter of Sergeant Conradt Peterson who started as a soldier and ended his military career as a sergeant in Colonel Jessup's Loyal Rangers; a United Empire Loyalist brigade from upstate New York that fought for the King in the American Revolution of 1776. Ultimately, these men were given land grants in Canada for their loyalty to the crown.)

Thomas LaPointe was baptised 'Modeste' Desautels 5 days after his birth on Dec. 20, 1825 in the parish of St. Esprit, Lower Canada. His parents were Joseph Desautels (dit LaPointe) and Marie 'Julie' Douge (dite Populus). The baptismal sponsors were Thomas' uncle, Platon Desautels and Sophie Goulais. We found conclusive evidence that Modeste and Thomas are one and the same through records that linked Thomas to a cousin, whose mother was also a child of Joseph Desautels dit LaPointe and Julie Douge dite Populus.
